Lee Johnstone is our Revue Thommen Strap Design Winner!!

(Click on any photo to enlarge)

Hi strap lovers. I want to give a shout out to Lee Johnstone for his winning design for my new Revue Thommen Airspeed Instrument. This competition was announced way back in June, and I had expected to announce much earlier, but life have been busy and I wanted to really mull over the great designs that were submitted. Lee's Design was: "Grey Croc with Red stitching to make the most of the watch Facia and for it to stand out". This caught my imagination in a couple of ways: First, I love Grey Alligator and I just happened to have a wonderful Grey gator in stock from our premium Alligator hide supplier Swiss Hides. Second, since the grey Gator in question has really huge scales (this was from a 7 foot plus animal) and the Airspeed instrument has nice wide 26mm lugs, it would really be a great showcase for the strap possibilities of this hide. Third, I'm a big fan of the Grey strap/Red stitching combination. Since like most submittals, the overarching design concept was there, but a number of the finer details weren't, was able to add my own design preference to the mix. As you can see, I build the strap to the essential shape of the Bell & Ross BR01/Br03 strap shape, which I had not originally planned to do, but this strap design allows for the best showcase of the giant scales of this alligator hide. Additionally since the strap is quite wide at 26mm at the lugs, 35mm at the widest and then tapering to 26mm at the buckle (as opposed to 24/34/24 for a BR01 strap), there was plenty of room for stitching, so I decided to add double stitching, because it was a great showcase for my super fine stitching that we offer on all our 'SuperExotic' upgrade straps. Using 3 ply waxed Irish linen of Red and Slate Grey, I think the look is quite striking and subtle at the same time. I had originally planned to use the Grey Alligator in the Swiss Hides color, but and had stitched the long side in Red and Cream White to match the numbers on the dial, but thought it was too bright, and decided to dye the Grey to a bit more of a Charcoal and re-stitched the strap in Red and Slate Grey instead. I'm really glad I did because the results have much more of a masculine, military feel. At 26/35/26mm this is a very substantial strap, using our 26mm brushed 'D9' screw-in Pre-V buckles. I chose to use my favorite lining material: Eel skin, super soft and ultra thin, Eel adds an unmatched level of luxury and super softness the wearing experience. as you can see form the photos, the alligator is rolled at the notches around the lugs instead of simply cut, which I have recently started to do with all exotic skin straps for straps that have this notching if the skin flexible enough to allow for it. Also this strap at about 3.5mm this is very soft and supple and just overall exudes luxury. I'm really happy with the new strap for my Revue Thommen Airspeed instrument and want to also send a big thank you to all the guys that submitted their design Ideas. This will certainly not be the only time that I offer a strap design competition. In the meantime, Lee has won a Dangerous9straps' exclusive 1951 vintage Swiss Army Nato/Zulu strap for the watch of his choice. Congrats Lee and thanks again for your great strap design!!

1945 Swiss Ammo for Per's Yellow Breitling SeaWolf

(Click on any photo to enlarge)

Hi strap lovers. We here at Dangerous9straps love building vintage Swiss Ammo straps for all kinds of watches, not just for Panerai. It seems as though just about any man's watch with some heft looks great paired with the vintage leather and if combined with the right stitch color, can be a stunning combo. Case in point is this 1945 Swiss Ammo strap build for my good customer Per from Stockholm. His is a great looking yellow Breitling Avenger Seawolf paired with the great 1945 vintage Swiss Ammo strap and has been hand saddle stitched using our soft yellow linen, which I think is a really great match for the yellow dial of the Seawolf and really makes his watch 'POP'. We could have used black linen, which would have looked good as well, but Per went with the bold choice and it's really paid off the an eye catching combo. Notched at the lugs, the strap is 24mm overall, which gives his Seawolf a much beefier look that a standard, straight 22mm wide strap. I think this combo is worth opening a bottle of the good stuff to celebrate. Thanks Per for sending along these great photos!! Your's is our latest 'Watch of the Week'.

Swiss Hides Vintage Chocolate American Alligator for PAM379

(click on any photo to enlarge)

Hi strap lovers. Here is a strap that we just completed this week for my very good customer Severin from Germany for his fantastic PAM379. It is a rare pleasure to build a strap for a solid gold Panerai and the PAM379 is a very special watch indeed and deserving of a very special strap. The strap featured here is just such a strap. Custom made for Severin using our beautiful Vintage Chocolate American Alligator from out ultra luxury American Alligator supplier - Swiss Hides, this hide has one of the most stunning finished I've ever seen. I've featured a couple of straps from made from this hide in previous posts, but I believe this is the fist to have not been given our exclusive "hand Antique finish", but is none the poorer for it. This strap is 27mm to fill the lug of the giant 47mm gold PAM, tapering to 22. photographed with a 22mm Panerai buckle, it will of course be worn with the solid gold buckle that come the PAM379. I think vintage chocolate color of the Alligator with pair beautifully with the gold case and tobacco dial of the big PAM. Richly padded and stitched with very fine dark chocolate 3ply waxed line thread. Severin has promised to send along some photos of his new strap and watch as soon as he receives it, and I'm looking forward to sharing them here with you when he does.

New strap for Eric's PAM193

(click on any photo to enlarge)

Hi strap lovers, here is on of the latest custom straps from Dangerous9straps . This strap as you can see is very customized to fit the watch case of the Panerai 193 in order to look like an integrated strap. Eric contacted me from Indonesia indicating that he wanted to have a vintage black strap that looks with notches at the lugs and that he wanted to have the strap look like it was one piece with the watch case. As luck would have it, I happen to have access to a PAM194, which shares the same or very similar case and lug profile with the PAM193, so I was able to use it as a fitment model. This strap features not only my custom thick curved lug upgrade, which is designed to minimize the gap that would typically exist between a straight end strap and the watch case, but also notching at the lugs to give this strap and extremely beefy look on the watch, being 35mm wide to match the total width of the lug. The strap then gently tapers to 24mm at the buckle. This strap like all Dangerous9straps is build from natural cream colored vegetable tanned leather then dyed to the custom color requested by the customer. In this case Eric wanted a very distressed/vintage black color. I think the color of the leather looks great with the titanium color of the PAM194 watch case and also looks great with the vintage character of the rustic natural heather colored waxed linen thread. I'm really pleased with how this strap turned out and my good customer Eric is very please as well. I can't wait to see photos of this strap mounted to his awesome PAM193.
